Hard to believe it's already 2016! I hope that everyone had a great Christmas holiday with family and friends. Here at Alta Mons, we celebrated the birth of Jesus a couple days early at WINTER CAMP! Winter Camp 2015 was filled with excellent weather (it was warm enough for junior high campers to zip line!), a new Willie Jack story and lots of s'mores, Christmas ornament making, and powerful worship services. Jean Broyles and Sherry Basham served as our camp nurses and Heather St. Clair (assisted by Robert Stutes) was our camp chaplain. We had 53 campers register and 14 summer staff return to camp to volunteer their time. Winter Camp has seen such growth in the past couple of years and we really appreciate your support!
To start off the new year and start preparing for SUMMER CAMP, I have begun visiting churches in the Roanoke District to speak about Alta Mons. This past Sunday, I visited Central UMC in Salem. My next church visit is Sunday January 31 at Greene Memorial UMC and I'll actually be giving the sermon that day. So if you'd like to come support me, I'd love to have you! I'm also planning on visiting Thrasher UMC on February 14, Bonsack UMC on February 21, and Southview UMC on February 28. Special thanks to Nurse Joan Wasserott for scheduling all of my church visits! If you'd like me to visit your church, just send me an e-mail at office@altamons.org! I'd love to come talk about Alta Mons with your congregation.
As camp fairs begin and job applications start rolling in, we are preparing for a great summer here at Alta Mons. 2016 WILL BE the year we hit 200 campers for the summer. Last summer we had 179, but we are all determined to finally meet our goal this summer. Alta Mons is growing, and that is thanks to the support of people like you. Summer camp brochures will be out in several weeks, so please encourage the school-age children that you know to sign up for camp!
There are a couple other events I would like to make you aware of. March 19 is Paul Bunyan Day and we need lots of volunteers to help clear our trails, clean out out gutters, and split wood. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending! We will have chili and baked potatoes for lunch, so bring the whole family. Secondly, our first annual Alta Mons Supporters Luncheon in April 2. We will be having lunch in the Dining Hall followed by a presentation about how YOU can help support and grow summer camp at Alta Mons. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to office@altamons.org or 540-268-2409 by March 18. There is no cost, we only ask that you attend and help spread the word about summer camp!
Once again, thank you all for your support! As we gear up for summer camp season, be thinking about how YOU can reach out to people in your community and tell them about Alta Mons.
Yours in Christ,
Meredith Simmons
