Check out what Lorna Bell-Frizzelle, mama to two Camp Alta Mons campers, has to say about her experience with Alta Mons!
Growing up in Roanoke, I went to Camp Alta Mons for summer camp and to be with my youth group for retreats. It was also one of the first places I took my husband when he came to my hometown. Flooded with memories just driving down the lane, I feel God every time I am there.
So, as soon as my son could go to Camp Alta Mons, he was signed up for mini camp! At 6 years old, he went to a place he had never been before, met all new people and spent two full days in Shawsville, Virginia encountering God's love. When we picked him up, it was heartwarming to hear his stores. My favorite stories were the ones that started with "Mama, you know how you told me at camp you got to..." and were followed by "I got to do that same thing!"
The next year, he asked to go back to mini camp! He was greeted by his former counselors, said goodbye to me and was off to make more Camp Alta Mons memories!
Then for his third year, his little sister joined the fun at mini camp. That year, I dropped off both of my children (6 and 8) at Camp Alta Mons for mini camp. I shed a tear or two or maybe three, not because I was sad or scared, but because I was so happy that they were both so excited to be there. My daughter fell head over heels with her experience the same way my son and I did.
Last year, my daughter was not old enough to go for the Elementary Camp, but my son was too old to go to mini camp. I spent a total of 12 hours transporting my kids back and forth to camp just so that they could be at Camp Alta Mons. And you want to know the other crazy part? We have another United Methodist Camp within 30 minutes of our house! But it is just not the same! There are many reasons why Camp Alta Mons is our church camp of choice, but my favorite reason.....it is now a family tradition to experience God at Camp Alta Mons!
