Time moves so fast. It honestly seems like just yesterday I was filling out my application to be a summer camp counselor at Alta Mons. I was 18 and still in high school. I remember being nervous for my interview and worried about being one of the youngest people on staff. I worried about making friends and doing something silly in front of everyone. Flash forward to today, now I’m the one doing the interviews and one of the oldest people on staff. I can honestly say that I’ve made the greatest friends in my life at Alta Mons, and that I do something silly in front of the staff at least seven times a day (fluff and jelly, anyone?)
Summer of 2015 will be my fifth year on summer staff and my third year as the Program Coordinator. Things, as always with me, are very busy. From camp fairs to writing staff contracts to switching background check companies, I’ve been working hard to help improve our program. During January I had the awesome opportunity to attend the United Methodist Camp and Retreat Leaders Gathering at Epworth by the Sea in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. It was such a joy to be surrounded by people who understand the struggles of being a camp person…I mean who else is going to listen to you complain about how the wrong version of a camp song can endlessly bother you? I also learned a lot about the camp world as a whole…for those of you who don’t know, this is my last year on summer staff but not my last year at Alta Mons. Beginning in August, you can find me in the office everyday and working full time at Alta Mons. More on that later in the year though, let’s not rush into adult life too fast!
I’ve also been doing A LOT of research and planning for the Alta Mons challenge course. From working with Project Adventure to dreaming big for the future, ropes has become an even bigger part of my job than ever. And I couldn’t be happier. Alta Mons is my never ending to do list, my passion, and the love of my life. With the goal of hitting 200 campers this year, I’ve certainly got my work cut out for me, but I trust that the Lord will be there every step of the way to help. Just like my favorite verse says, “Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” So here’s to taking Alta Mons to the next level, to making it the best it’s ever been, and to an amazing summer full of memories!
