I am excited to start my blog off with what may be my final hello! My name is Likeith Saunders, though around Camp Alta Mons I am also known as Mother Larry. I am ecstatic and proud to come back for my fourth year on summer staff. This will be my second year as Worship Coordinator. Previously I was the Pool Coordinator in 2014 and a Camp Counselor in 2013. If you have not met me or seemingly have and can't remember my face (it's alright it happens!) take a gander to your left: you can see that I'm demonstrating the principle of "Minimizing Campfire Impact" for our blog's theme of Leave No Trace.
I'm so glad to be back at camp for what will be my fourth and final time. As the Worship Coordinator I will work with our Chaplains each week to bring both the fun and musical elements of worship to the campers, while also helping to guide them through our theme for the summer which is "Mysteries of Faith.” I believe this theme best exemplifies what Alta Mons is as a whole. A place filled with a wonder and mystery that can help you to discover who you are. Alta Mons is also a place of spiritual sanctuary as you continue your journey with Christ.
During camp, we will be out in the woods and we will be having lots of campfires! So a couple things to remember when building campfires: always build fires in established fire pits. When collecting wood, collect only downed and dinky wood that is smaller than your forearm. When cleaning up the fire pit try to burn up all wood so that it turns to ash. After making sure the fire has turned to ash scatter the ash over a wide area away from the campsite. Lastly make sure there is no trash left in or around the fire pit so as to not leave anything to attract any curious woodland critters.
Working here has led me to discover my passion for not only playing music, but specifically worship music. It is truly a magical place where no matter who you are you find yourself immersed in an environment of not only fun, nature and friends, but also fellowship, family, and the spiritual love and power of God.
Soon we’ll be hearing the familiar sounds of excited campers arriving, the crackling of the campfire as we sit around telling jokes and singing songs, and the shouts of happy children playing games. I am also excited to forge strong bonds with staff members that will last past summertime and be with us forever as we go wherever God's plan takes us. Until then please keep the campers, staff, and fellow parents in your hearts and prayers as we get ever closer to this camp season.
Yours in the Love of Christ,
Likeith Saunders
