Hey, everyone! My name is Jennie, and I am the Program Coordinator for this summer. This will be my third summer at Camp Alta Mons—obviously I’ve fallen in love with it. Camp has always had a special place in my heart, no matter what camp I am at. However, the first moment I came to Alta Mons I was drawn in completely and have fallen in love with everything Alta Mons. From Christmas Tree Mountain to the Back 400 to Stiles Falls, the environment surrounding me shows all of God’s beautiful creations. Once camp is filled with children and counselors, hearing the laughter and camp songs brings the joy and hope of the Lord to everyone in the valley. Each summer comes with its own crazy stories and adventures that can only happen when living in the woods with people you love.
As a staff member, I am here to provide the space for children and youth to experience God’s love at camp just as I have growing up. Some of my favorite memories are from my church camp experiences. I learned things about myself, I learned more about God, and I learned how to lean on my community of believers when things got too hard. Giving children the opportunity to hear about how much God loves them is one of the most beautiful experiences. I have been brought to tears many times while seeing over sixty campers sing their hearts out to “Open the Eyes of My Heart”. There are so many people that have not experienced God moving in their hearts, so seeing children be so excited to sing about God showing them the love around them is breathtaking.
Through my work at camp, I have learned that I want to work with children. I am an Elementary Education student at Roanoke College. God has led me to be a part of the team that supports and teaches future generations. Being a source of hope and joy for young children to see will hopefully spread that hope and joy into their own lives. Camp provides me with a renewal of hope for a beautiful future. Nature is one of God’s most beautiful creations. Every part of God can be seen in nature, and it is amazing when youth can find the presence of God in nature. Because of camp, I have found a home away from home that continuously provides a space for me to experience God and grow in my faith and relationship with Him. I would not be where I am today without the camp memories I hold in my heart.
