Hello! My name is Hannah Perkins and I had the utmost pleasure of being Camp Alta Mons’ Worship Coordinator this summer! I’ve been on summer staff for four years, and was also a camper for two years prior to that. My job this summer included leading worship, singing songs with campers, and helping the chaplain convey our theme to the campers. In addition to this, I also had the awesome opportunity to lead nature times with units, which isn’t really part of my official job description; it’s just something I really enjoy doing and am passionate about.
Going into this summer, I had some worries about leading worship and how it would work with the masks and social distancing. I wasn’t sure if kids would remember who I was and was also afraid that my ability to impact campers would be limited by COVID-19 protocols. Now that I am on my way out, I realize that I had nothing to worry about at all! Alta Mons is an amazing place, with incredible people, and it is pretty much impossible to feel separated from God and others here. It was so epic to see the joy of both the campers and the staff in just being here, and it was almost as if nothing had changed from my past summers here in terms of energy and community. So many people love this place, and it was such an Alleluia moment for me to be able to experience the joy and love of God with others this summer.
In particular, it was just so amazing for me to be able to lead nature and introduce kids to how God’s creation always has more layers and intricacies than what meets the eye. Whether it was seeing a kid catch their first crawdad or seeing their eyes light up as we walked past a parliament of Eastern screech owls, I felt God was there in those moments and I hope the campers could feel it too. Overall, this summer has been so amazing despite all the difficulties we faced, and I am so overwhelmed by the impact this summer had on me and on all the lives of campers we touched.
