Greetings from Charlottesville to Shawsville (dare you say that three times fast):
After spending five summers at Alta Mons as a camper and two as a counselor, I am
ready to dive head first into my new job as the Program Intern! Excited does not even begin to
describe how I feel about this job--working at Alta Mons is such fun and the summer camp
program is something that I am truly passionate about because I believe in its mission and purpose wholeheartedly.
To me there is no greater joy than watching a camper encounter the wilderness for the first time or helping a child conquer their fear of the Pamper Pole (because that thing scares me too!). The experiences I’ve had at summer camp, both as a child and counselor alike, have shaped me into the person I am today and for that I could not be more thankful. Alta Mons means so very much to me, and anytime I need a reminder of that all I have to do is gaze up at the beautiful picture of the Back 400 that hangs in the living room of my college apartment.
So far as Program Intern, I’ve encountered many tasks that I expected—looking for nurses
and chaplains (any volunteers out there?!) and staff recruitment. As far as the unexpected goes,
I haven’t arrived in that territory quite yet, but I’m sure it’ll happen soon! One of the things I
love most about Alta Mons is that it never fails to take you beyond your comfort zone and into
uncharted waters.
So here’s to an awesome summer 2013—may our staff be skilled and ready, may our
camp be filled with laughing children, and may the Lord be ever present in the beautiful and
magical land we all know as Alta Mons.
Peace, Love, & Jesus Christ,
Meredith Simmons
