Hey camp fam! My name is Eryn Turney and I’m super psyched to be your Trips Coordinator this summer! As you can see in the picture, I’m a big fan of trees. This picture represents the Leave No Trace Principle “Leave What You Find.” As much as I would like to take this tree away as my friend forever, it will serve its purpose much better where it is. The tree is a hemlock. Across the United States, a parasite has grown to infect these trees, and ultimately kills them. So I will definitely be leaving this one alone to enjoy it as long as possible! I love flower crowns as much as the next person, and dream of having my own cute forest animals as pets. But in order for future visitors to enjoy nature like I get to, I’m going to choose to leave nature alone to do its thing as if I had never touched it!
When camp ends, I’m at Virginia Tech studying Natural Resources Conservation. Junior year has definitely been tough, but I’m working with the hope to eventually become a Wilderness Therapist out west somewhere, at least for a while. Who really knows, though? I’m a firm believer life always works out as it should, and as long as you wake up every day happy, then you are beyond blessed!
Last summer was my first at Camp Alta Mons and I got to experience three weeks’ worth of crazy experiences with middle schoolers. This was by far the greatest thing I’ve ever done with my time and effort. The kids we are lucky to have at camp are the future of our world. They will be the ones saving our planet and working to achieve peace. Every day I look forward to the day where we get to wake up in the woods, hang out with cool kiddos in the summer sun, and be immersed in an environment of support, love, and spiritual connectedness.
Soon we’ll be laughing and loving, and living slowly… moment to moment, for God’s glory. It’s truly fulfilling to live pouring out of yourself and into the kids and fellow staff members. In jobs like this, you forget yourself for a while, and take on the responsibility of attempting to imitate Christ’s never-ending love to a bunch of God’s unique creations. It’s refreshing to be at camp for all the uniqueness of it, where you can learn more from kids than they might ever from you (even though we definitely try!). It is truly unearthly, and I can’t wait to be back, on and off site, helping with ropes, or working with the counselors to lead a cool trip.
Until then, please keep current staff, prospective staff, and all the kiddos in your prayers as we get closer to camp season! This one can be the best yet.
Yours in living for today,
Eryn Turney
