Brochures will be mailed by March 1st to all campers from the past 3 summers and Roanoke District UMC Churches. If that doesn't include you, request a summer camp packet at from the office or download one from the link above.

Our mission is to provide space for everyone to experience God, from campers, volunteer and to staff. During the summer we do this by providing a fun, challenging, unique Christian experience in the out-of-doors. The summer camp program focuses on six aspects that help define our mission: Sprituality, Envrionment, Leadership, Stewardship, Community all in a FUN safe environment. Campers are placed in a Family Unit composed of 12-14 campers of children and youth. Family units are made up of 7 males with a male counselor and 7 females with a female counselor. About 100 campers may attend each of the 5 day long sessions. 35-40 trained staff work with each session of summer resident camp. Volunteers from local churches are on the staff for one week at a time and serve as counselors, nurses, kitchen and maintenance staff as well as chaplains.

Preschoolers Learn to GardenEach camper unit plans its own activities according to their abilities and interests. Counselors guide and facilitate the activities with the assistance of program staff. The elementary-age (rising 3rd-6th grade) and mini (rising 1st-3rd grade) camper units do most of their activities on the Camp property. Activities include nature study, crafts, pool, fishing, hikes to our 45ft water fall, field games, low cooperation ropes activities, campouts and more. Their lodging is in cabins and meal service is in the dining hall.

Junior-high (rising 6th-9th Grade) campers sleep in more rustic Hogans at sites of two cabins set further in the woods and prepare meals in their outdoor kitchen. Program activities are more advanced for the older age group and include all the previous activities in addition to high ropes adventure and learning greater group living skills in the outdoors. Campers will continue to grow in their spiritual journey as they experience living in community and group study.
Junior High Adventure units go out of camp on one-day trips such as biking, whitewater canoeing/kayaking, backpacking and lake watersports.

The staff of Camp Alta Mons helps build Christian community during the week. The Christian counselors and staff blend traditional camp activities with biblically oriented “teachable moments” that build upon their own faith journey in relation to the summer theme. Camp Alta Mons seeks to affirm the self worth of all persons with through the camp activities, cabin discussions, group worship, campfires and all while having a GREAT time! Activities include: swimming, crafts, nature study, cookouts, camp-outs, hikes to the waterfalls, archery, fishing, wildlife conservation, canoeing, hayrides, ropes/initiative course (low and high elements). (Click here for availability and/or on-line registration)

Alta Mons also helps to provide meals to children through the USDA Summer Food Service Program. We have been a part of this program for a number years and are commited to providing a nutritious and well balanced meal for all children.

Mission Camp

Camp Alta Mons has recently begun to hold camps for mission groups/teams who are interested in working on the camp or doing home repair type work in the community. The camps are typically for groups that include both youth and adults. (Arrangements can be made for younger children to accompany their parents.) Mission "weeks" normally start on Sunday evening and end on Saturday. The week would include such things as low ropes team building, high ropes activities, swimming (during the summer season), worship, meals, lodging, tools, materials, work projects on the camp and/or in the community, and (from May-September) a canoe trip on the New River. Lodging and meals are normally provided. We can work out a package suitable for your group to give you the opportunity to let God's love shine through your service.
